At Coolhaven Turf we want you to achieve the best, most long-lasting results with your lawn, so we’ve put together this guide on how to prepare for laying turf.
There’s nothing more rewarding then stepping back to admire your new green lawn. But to prevent all your hard work from going to waste you need to ensure you’re fully prepared.
From ordering your turf to prepping your soil and getting your tools ready, we’re here to walk you through the turf laying process, one step at a time.
Preparing the soil
Laying Turf can be physically demanding, so we recommend preparing the soil the day before your turf is being delivered.
To start make sure you remove all building waste, rocks, old lawn and weeds. Anything left behind, especially weeds will grow up between the new turf joins and you don’t want that ruining your new lawn!
You also have to make sure dead weeds are removed as well. Although they won’t be able to grow through your turf they actually have an impact from below by blocking the turf roots from finding the soil they need to establish and grow evenly.

Getting tools ready for laying
It takes 1 person approximately 1-1.5 hours to install 1 pallet of turf, but it can take a while to get the hang of it and takes longer if you need to do a lot of cutting.
So before you start prepping for or laying turf, ensure you have all the tools you need ready to go.
Before you even have your turf delivered it could be beneficial to borrow or hire a turf or lawn roller. You can find these at machinery hire businesses that also have equipment like rotary hoes and lawn mowers available.
Make sure you keep something sharp handy for cutting the grass when necessary. A sharp shovel, knife or machete would do the job.
You’ll also need a wheelbarrow to carry turf around and rake to level out soil.
But most importantly, don’t forget the essentials like a hat, gloves and plenty of water!
